Is a cure for Alzheimer’s disease on the horizon?  Researchers who are working night and day to understand the complexities of the brain and of dementia certainly hope so. New discoveries about how the brain functions related to dementia and Alzheimer’s are being made and the race is on.  The last thirty years have brought a world of knowledge about Alzheimer’s disease and the current discoveries are astounding.

Just as amazing are the ways in which researchers predict Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias can actually be prevented and/or  the progress slowed down in those already afflicted with the disease.

Take a look at what you can do today to prevent Alzheimer’s:

  • Regular physical exercise increases blood and oxygen flow to the brain and protects heart health, something researchers feel is an indicator for those at risk for Alzheimer’s disease.
  • A healthy diet is important, one low in red meats and high in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and good oils.
  • Protecting ourselves from head injury is also important.
  • As well, maintaining strong social connections such as joining group activities and meeting with friends regularly.
  • And of course the old adage “use it or lose it” applies to the brain as well. Keeping our brains mentally active lowers the risk of cognitive decline and of developing Alzheimer’s or dementia.
